Istanbul- The Blue Mosque-Turkey-2011

There is a Carnaval Atmosphere Outside The Blue Mosque

The Blue Mosque (Mosque of the Sultanahmet) built in 1609 by Mehmet has 6 minarets which at the time was considered a sacreligious attempt to rival the architecture of Mecca thus making it is one of the most controversial and  famous religious buildings in the world.
The name  derives from the 20,000 marvellous blue-toned Iznik tiles decorating the interior walls. The blue tiles are absolutely stunning and the dome is just amazing. Thousands of tourists as well as worshipers visit the Mosque daily.

It was an extremely hot day when we visited and as one is required to remove one's shoes on entering the Mosque there was on overpowering aroma of "smelly socks!" But the beauty of the area is so overwhelming that one soon forgets about the aroma.
