Fishing and Dive Boats also Moored at the Marina |
Pulau Tioman is a spectatular island off the east coast of peninsular Malaysia. Today it is a tourist paradise for diving and hiking but it the late 1950's it was the setting for the mythical Bali Hai in the movie South Pacific.
We spent many months tucked up in the cute little very safe public marina at Kampong Tekek (the main town). Sometimes we left Hamamas there while we travelled to Singapore, Kuching, Vietnam and Cambodia. But most of the time we just enjoyed being able to snorkle in the clear waters, the clearest we had seen since we left Palau in 2008 and hiking across the mountain to the other side of the island (see next Post).
Tioman has a ferry to a few places on mainland Malaysia as well as to other villages on Tioman. We used this service often to get to the town of Mersing on the mainland so we could catch a bus to Singapore or for the shopping as there were only a few small stores on the island.

Police, Defence and Ferry Boats |
In Tioman we met many new fellow cruisers from the catarams and yachts Yelo, Northstar, Roxy, Nowadays and Hamamas's sister ship "Court Jester". We also met up again with Ketura, Estrellita, Gaia, Merlic II, Helena Zwo and Dallandra and Been-a-Long whom we last saw in our home club in 2006. We had fun times including meals out and parties on the huge catamaran "Supercat".

Our friends from Been-a-Long had engine problems so they were helped into the Marina.

Tom took this next set of photos at the Sultan's Ego Challenge celebrations that were held in the car park near the Marina. Bear in mind these dancers were moving at great speed so Tom did an amazing job of capturing them! There was even a free traditional Malaysian meal for the whole village and marina residents served during the performance. Lucky us!
So that was a glimpse of our stay on picturesque Palau Tioman. We would love to return there on day.
