Kuching "The City of Cats" Malaysia 2010

25 May
While we were on Tioman Island we decided to fly to Kuching in Borneo, Sarawak, East Malaysia as we had been unable to get there with the boat due to seasonal time constraints. First we had to take the ferry from Tioman to Mersin then catch the bus to Singapore for a flight to Kuching. It is the capital of Sarawak and lies mainly on the southern bank of the Sarawak River.

It was given it's name by the second White Raja in 1872  and is now known as the "City of Cats." There are cat replicas and statues everywhere and the tourists shops are brimming to overflowing with "cats of every colour shape and size"  Fran posed with the cats.

The city has many historical buildings, landscaped parks and garden, an intersting waterfront, colourful markets, museums as well as  Christain churches, Chinese Temples and Mosques.

This is what we Crossed the river in.

The Futuristic Civic Centre
The Astana was built for Charles Brooke in 1870. During the Japanese occupation, prisioners were interned in the basement of the building, Today it is the Governer of Sarawak's residence.

The Astana
Fort Margherita was built by Charles Brook  in 1870 and named it after his wife. It was designed to guard Kuching  from pirate attacks during those early years, it is now a Police Museum.

As we wandered around town we came across St Thomas's Cathederal and couldn't resist taking Tom's photo with it.

When then came to this spectatular bridge and decided to cross it so that we could find out where the music was coming from.

And lo and behold it was from a Friday afternoon exercise class. Well Fran just had to join in!

Later we found this entrace gate to Chinatown as well as the esquisite Chinese Temple.

This Temple was Spectular!

Some of the parks were very interestingly laid out. Note another Chinese Temple in the background.

After a very busy day site seeing we were amazed to see a Street Parade passing our Hotel. We had no idea what it was about except the Budha was a bit of a give away, so we assumed it was a religious parade.
