Cruising to Marmaris,Turkey

14 Sept, 2015
After spending  a number weeks enjoying Fethiye we finally had the right winds to allow us to get to Marmaris. We had tried a few weeks earlier but when the waves starting breaking over the bow we turned tail and headed back to our calm anchorage in Fethiye!
Once again after weighing anchor, we had to motor  the 48nm to the Pupa Anchorage in Marmaris. This time, however, the seas were calm  and even glassy at times and the breeze was light. It was beautifully calm in the anchorage when we arrived  with only a few other yachts to be seen.

The next morning, after  a peaceful  night, we dinghied over to the nearest yacht (Elusive) that was flying a British Flag only to find out that they were in fact an  Irish couple who had wintered in Egypt with our friends Mary Kay and Russ (Once Around). We went on to enjoy a number of days and get togethers with them

The Pupa Hotel been upgraded since our last visit. It was renamed Joya del Mer but they still allowed cruisers to dock their dinghies there while we caught the dolmus to town or visited their cafe and restaurant. The small hotel dock was full mainly with Turkish Motor Cruisers and a charter fleet of yachts.

One day we watched as a boat on shore suddenly caught fire. Fortuanatly no one was injured and the boats on the dock were not harmed. The fire brigade arrived and took a while to put it out as it kept re-igniting.

We were thrilled when our Australian  friends Anne and Peter on Fourth  Dimension arrived. They were just as excited as we were as we had last seen each other in Finike in early April, 2015 so we had lots of tales to tell each other over sundowners in the next few days.
