Suomenlinna Sea Fortress, Helsinki Finland June 2015

2 June 2015
Although it was still overcast we decided to take the ferry ride across to the UNESCO listed World Heritage Sea Fortress on Suomenlinna Island. It was founded in 1748 and is of special importance as it played a role in the defence of Sweden, Russia and Finland at various times.
The fortifications and the old garrison buildings have been restored and converted into residential properties.Although the sea fortress is a huge tourist attraction there are still 800 residents living and working on the island  today.
We would highly recommend a day trip to the island after having spent a very relaxing day at the fortress wandering around to all the major areas of interest.

These reminded us of the Greek island fishing boats
