The Alamo, San Antonio, Texas, USA, 2014

12 Jan, 2014
The main reason for our visit to San Antonio while on our Road Trip in Texas was to see the Alamo (San Antonio de Valero Mission),  the most famous of  the five Old Spanish  Missions. The missions were established in the 18th century as an outpost for the Spanish Government and the Catholic Church. Apparently they flourished until the mid 18th century  but declined due toinadequate military support, disease and increased hostilities with the Apaches and Comanches.
As we are both "history buffs" we wanted to visit the Alamo because it is famous for The Battle of the Alamo which took place in 1836.  The Alamo old mission was occupied by 187 men from Texas and around the world who were fighting for the independence of Texas from Mexico. On  6 March 1836 the men in the Alamo were defeated by a force of 5,000 Mexican troops. All 187 men were killed, and "Remember the Alamo!" became the battle cry of the Texans for the rest of the war.The Alamo became a National Historic Landmark in 1960 and is now visited by thousands of tourists each year. No photos are allowed inside the Alamo building as it is a shrine of remembrance.
