Culloden Battlefield- A Moving Experience, Scotland, 2013

3 May 2013
"Off we go” on the tourist trail again!  Actually we felt and looked more like snowmen this morning when we set off as it was only 0.5 degrees  as the hills were covered with a sprinkling of snow. We knew it would be inclement weather for a visit to Culloden but we “troopers” carried on regardless!

Visiting Culloden was a very moving experience as you could see from the landscape that the Jacobite rebellion (supported by the French) and the subsequent rout at Culloden in 1746 was doomed from the outset.  However, before we ventured out onto the battleground we visited the new Visitors Centre and the excellent indoor exhibition with a diorama of the hour long battle.

As we walked over the battlefield we were saddened by thoughts of the blood that was shed and the  lives that were lost on this field. Of the 7000 troops in the Highland Army, 1500-2000 were killed or wounded and 154 captured. 220 Frenchmen were captured. In contrast, there were 8000 troops in the Royal Army and only 50 were killed and 259 wounded.
