As a result of our volunteering connection with the Miri Chapter of Mercy Malaysia we were invited to attend the presentation of Fire Extinguishers to a group of representatives from a number of villages a few hours drive from Miri. Longhouses are usually made from timber and therefore very vulnerable to being completley destroyed by fire. So the extinguishers were being donated as a preventative measure.
We gathered at the Mercy Malaysia headquaters and were the driven to one of the Longhouses where the presentation was took place. There was a tradtional dance of welcome and then the presentation and speeches began. Each volunteers from Mercy Malaysia presented a fire extinguisher to a different village Longhouse representative. (Remember to click on the photos to enlarge them)
