Sabah-The Kinabatangan River- Malaysia- 2009

The Kinabatangan River

Another highlight for us on our tour was the time we spent on the Lower Kinabatangan River which at 560 km long is the largest river in Sabah and has a huge concentration of wildlife. We stayed in a very basic lodge and each morning and late afternoon we went out in riverboat with our special tour guide who could spot birds and animals as we sped along the river. It took us a little while to see what he was pointing out but then we became better at spotting the wildlife.

We only saw one "wild man of Borneo" in the wild and he was too high up in the branches to photograph but we were thrilled never-the-less.

However, we saw an amazing variety of wild life, including snakes, goannas, proboscis monkeys, short and long tailed macaque monkeys and many, many colourful birds. Hadi our guide was able to imitate the call of many birds, so I'm sure we saw more than other tourists.

One day we spent a far while waiting for the elephants to cross the river but without any luck. It was very peaceful just hanging around and chatting.

This is an amazing area and one day we would like to take Hamamas into the river to spend more time there. In fact our whole trip to Sandakan and the River was a fantastic experience made even more special by our new friend and guide, Hadi.We would go back tomorrow if there wasn't so much else to see!
