Moving along the Mission Trail, our next stop was Mission San Juan Capistrano which was originally founded in 1716 in eastern Texas but was relocated to its present location in 1731. In 1756, the stone church, a friary, and a granary were completed. Like the other missions San Juan was a self-sustaining community and by mid century with its rich farm and pasturelands became a regional supplier of agricultural products. A larger church was begun but was abandoned when half complete as the result of population decline.
- Mission San Juan has been partially restored and contains a small museum It has been active parish church since 1909. There were not many tourists the day we visited so we were able to wander around at our leisure.
