Ancient Ruins of The Asklepion, Kos, Greece 2013

25 August 2013
While in Kos we visited the Asklepion which is just a few kilometres out of town. There is a funny little bus set up as a”kiddie train” that trundles out to the site so we caught that.

All Aboard!
Established in the 4th century BC, the Asklepion was a religious, healing and medical training centre with temples devoted to Apollo, the healer, and his son Asklepios, the god of healing. The School of Medicine at the complex followed the teachings of Hippocrates even though it was established after his death.  The Asklepion remained in use until AD 554 but very little remains today due to continuous earthquakes.

There are bits and pieces of the ruins scattered over its 3 levels and the view from the top level over Kos, the sea and the Turkish Coast are superb.

Fran having fun.
We spent a pleasant few hours wandering around the ruins.
