Pali Harbour, Nisyros Greece 2013

18 August, 2013
Delightful Pali (Palon) Harbour is a small protected “yachtie port” on Nisyros island. Pali Harbour has a number of family run restaurants, lots of bike and car hire places, a couple of small shops as well as a bakery and a liquor store. Just a few steps away from the harbour there is a lovely little beach for swimming and relaxing.

Like all the tourists places there are wall to wall restaurants!
This was the view from our stern on our first visit. Note the bikes.
Buildings around town
Aphrodite was our favorite family run restaurant .

What a surprise it was to see this enormous unfinished building. Apparently it was going to be an Institute of Hydrotheraphy but the authorities prevented the owners from building a protecting rock seawall so it was abandoned.

The Institute of Hydotheraphy. A failed project!

Nearby we found this funny little Church built in 1871 around what we think are old Roman Baths. We just happened to be there the day this lady came to ensure her parent’s memorial plaque had been erected.

Note the "thermal pool"

There was never a dull moment in Pali as the “yacht charter fleets”  were continuously coming and going so that sometimes the harbour was completely full.

It was necessary for us to stay in Pali harbour twice on our trip through the Greek islands because of the inclement weather. On our first visit we ended up being there for 7 days and on the second visit we actually stayed for 15 days as the Meltemi blew at around 26-30kts for days on end spraying salt water all over the boats. We  waited for a break in the weather as wanted to go north west to a few more islands and that would have been into the wind.
It is strange but we only have a few photos of the bad weather as the salt spray was continuous and waves would often break over the sea wall! So photographing was a bit hazardous for the camera.

Note the white caps in the distance
We really didn’t mind staying so long though as we loved it there and had decided, on both occasions, to stay till we had our “weather window” to move on.
