The Royal Yacht Britannia, Edinburgh, Scotland 2013

25 April 2013
The Royal Yacht Britannia, the former Royal Yacht of  Queen Elizabeth II,  is  now permanently moored as an exhibition ship at Ocean Terminal near Edinburgh, Scotland so naturally, being sailors, we just had to visit it!
Once again we were only able to take photographs in certain areas but that didn't stop us from wandering all over the ship and peeking into every corner. The magnificent Royal Apartments, Royal Bedrooms as well as the Sun Lounge were no go photo areas.

The Royal Yacht Britannia  was the 83rd vessel to be used as a floating accommodation for the Royal families since the restoration of King Charles II in 1660. This Britannia (the second one to be named Britannia) was used by the Queen and other members of the Royal Family for 44 years during many UK and overseas tours.

Britannia was built by the Clyde shipbuilders John Brown & Co at a cost of £2,098,000 to replace her 50-year-old predecessor, Victoria and Albert III.  She was named  Britannia (Queen's choice) and launched by The Queen on 16 April 1953 and was commissioned on 11 January 1954. Britannia was decommissioned on 11 December 1997.

It was difficult to photo the entire ship because she was moored next to the dock. In fact we had to more from the ship to the shore to change decks using normal stairs.

The binnacle on the veranda deck was first used in the Royal George (built in 1817) and since has been fitted into each successive Royal Yacht.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit to the Royal Yacht Britannia and would certainly recommend it as a great day out.
