Overlooking Sandakan Harbour |
Later we left Hamamas in the Sutera Marina and flew to Sandakan on the east coast of Sabah Island. We were thrilled as we flew over Mt Kinabalu as the mist cleared and we had the most magnificent view of the snow capped peak! It almost felt like we had climbed to the peak ourselves!

The Gates of the Puu Juh Shih Temple |
Sandakan is on the east coast of Sabah and it is a large commercial centre as a variety of products from the interior are exported from it's large harbour. In addition it is the jumping off point for many of the local attractions and while there we visited most of them.

Inside the Temple |
We also visited the incredible Central Market which was on of cleanest and well set out markets we have ever seen.

The Incredible Sim Sim Water Village |
While in Sandakan we visited the former home the author Agnus Keith and her husband who was the Conservator of Forests from 1925 until 1952 . The home is set high on a hill overlooking the harbour and has a "view to die for!"

Agnes Keith House |
Agnes Keith wrote 3 wonderful historical books of her impressions and experiences of wild Borneo. Her first book "Land Below the Wind" is about the early days in Sandakan, "Three Came Home" tells of her experiences during the Japanese Occupation and her last book "White Man Returns" tells of her subsequent return to Sandakan after the War II. Try them as they are well worth reading!
