Nisyros Island, Greece, 2013

17 August 2013
Yesterday we finally hired a car and toured to a few of the tourist spots on Nisyros Island which is one of the Dodecanese Greek Islands in the Aegean Sea. Nisyros is of particular interest to us because it has an active volcano with five craters in the caldera and a path down into the Stefanos crater. In fact, Nisyros is a “volcanic island” so Tom, being a Geologist, was interested in getting “up close and personal” with some of those rocks!

There were 10 Tourist buses arrived while we were there!

There are two villages perched on the volcano’s rim and we visited both of them.  Emborios, which was abandoned after it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1931. Now days there are a few residents who run a couple of restaurants overlooking the caldera and there is also a picturesque little church.

The other rim village is beautiful Nikia with its dazzling white houses that are visable way off shore. There are about 50 residents who have returned to the town to re-build their family homes.

Next we visited the delightful Church of the Prophet Elias at “Eagle’s Nest Point Lookout” which sits precariously on the rim of the volcano and offers spectacular views of the caldera and the surrounding islands.

As it was lunch time we headed back down to the coast to Mandraki, the island’s major port and capital. This busy little town has a charming waterfront and labyrinth of streets all huddled below the 14th century monastery and the Mycenaean Castle (Paleokastro).

After such a busy enjoyable day we were well and truly ready to head  to Hamamas in Pali harbour.
