Yesterday we finally hired a car
and toured to a few of the tourist spots on Nisyros Island which is one of the
Dodecanese Greek Islands in the Aegean Sea. Nisyros is of particular interest
to us because it has an active volcano with five craters in the caldera and a
path down into the Stefanos crater. In fact, Nisyros is a “volcanic island” so
Tom, being a Geologist, was interested in getting “up close and personal” with
some of those rocks!

There are two villages perched
on the volcano’s rim and we visited both of them. Emborios, which was abandoned after it was destroyed
by an earthquake in 1931. Now days there are a few residents who run a couple of
restaurants overlooking the caldera and there is also a picturesque little
church.
