One of the main reasons for travelling to the Fredricksburg area was to visit the National Museum of the Pacific War and what a find that was. If you are history or WW11 buff, as we are, this is the place for you!
The National Museum of the Pacific War aims to preserve the memory of the Pacific War and those who served in it. The museum offers many informative exhibits of the war in the Pacific from the bombing of Pearl Harbour to the taking of Okinawa and Iwo Jima. There is also thought provoking section on the bombing of Tokyo and the dropping of the atomic bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima.
The outdoor area near the main Museum has a number of sections displaying large warfare machinery, the Plaza of the Presidents, honouring the ten US Presidents who served during WWII and the Memorial Walk.
Located across the street from the main museum is the "Pacific Combat Zone" section. The indoor exhibit displays many planes and even houses a PT boat! In the outdoor there is a re-creation of a Pacific island battlefield where "live re-enactments" are held throughout the year. We found that the tour of the "Pacific Combat Zone" was extremely interesting and informative and would highly recommend it. In fact this could be know as "boys toys heaven!"
The outdoor and indoor sections of both museums are comprehensive and extensive so it is just as well the entrance ticket is valid for 48 hours because one can become "fact" overloaded! Even though we spent two full days immersed in the exhibits we would "go back there in a flash"
