Patmos Island, Greece, 2013

18 Sept, 2013
Patmos island was the last of and furthest north Dodecanese island we visited during our Greek island Odessey Our main reason for going to Patmos was to see the famous Monastery of St John (refer to the other Post) however, we did wander around the town to try to “get the feel of it.

The town itself, Skala Pothia, was unremarkable although it was a busy port town with the usual array of restaurants and tourist junk shops as well supermarkets, bakeries and fish mongers. The cars and motorbikes were a constant noise so it was not a relaxing place to be.

Sponge stores were plentiful!
There were a few interesting incidents in the harbour while we were moored. The first was that as a freighter that had been loading all day at the dock opposite, left the dock and became stuck on a sand bar. It took 3 motor boats a couple of hours to eventually pull it off!

Even the Coast Guard got in on the act.
The next morning a huge freighter came into the harbour and decided to moor close to the yachts. First it tried to turn but it was being pushed back onto all the yachts so eventually we all had to slacken off our chains so that it wouldn’t catch us as it went forward. There were a few anxious moments for us all because he was so CLOSE. In fact the freighter did move the anchor of small boat.

Everyone was worried about their anchor chains
Unfortunately we were only able to stay on Patmos for a couple as nights as the Meltemi was due again and we needed to schuttle south.
