As we continued on our tourist trail of Scotland we headed to
the Falkirk Wheel which is an amazing rotating boat lift contraption that lifts
vessels and passengers from one level in the canal to the next. It connects the Forth and Clyde Canals with
the Union Canal and replaces the 11 locks which had previously been used but
had fell into disuse. The difference in
the height of the canals at the Wheel is 79 feet (24m).
The Falkirk Wheel was built using Millennium funding and was
opened in 2002 by Queen Elizabeth II as part of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations.
Both the Wheel and the lovely surrounds are now a major tourist attraction as
well as a great day out for Scottish families.

Note the Boat in the Wheel |
A short walk away from the Falkirk Wheel complex are the
remains of the stone and turf fortification of the Antonine Wall which was
built on an earth mound by the Roman
Army around 140 AD. This site was a tad disappointing as we really
expected to see more of the fortifications.
